PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Dec. 2) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team took a three-point lead at halftime against Chatham on Wednesday night and appeared to be on their way to a win in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both teams.
Unfortunately, the Cougars were able to battle back and down the Yellow Jackets 47-43 in Pittsburgh. With the win, Chatham improved to 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in PAC play. The Jackets fell to 1-3 on the young season and 0-1 in conference action.
Waynesburg got the night off to a solid start as freshman Paige Pearce completed a three-point play roughly eight minutes into the game that gave the visitors a 12-6 lead. With 9:45 to go in the opening period, Waynesburg extended its lead to seven on a Morgan Hoone lay up.
The two teams battled throughout the rest of the first half and when halftime came around, the Yellow Jackets went into the locker room with a 21-18 lead. Over the first 20 minutes, Waynesburg's bench out-scored Chatham's backups 10-0.
The tide of the game changed during the early part of the second period when the Cougars went on a 5-0 run that turned a 23-22 Waynesburg lead into a 27-23 Chatham advantage. After the scoring spurt, the Jackets were never able to regain the lead.
Sophomore point guard Hannah Hunter continued a solid start to her season by tallying a team-high 12 points on five-of-nine shooting from the floor. Sophomore Morgan Hoone started her second game in a row and again reached double digits in scoring with 11.
Freshman Brittany Spencer racked up a team-high seven rebounds.
Chatham was paced by Kayla Hilko, recorded game highs in points (15) and rebounds (10) on her way to a double-double. The Cougars' five three-pointers, to Waynesburg's two treys proved to be the difference-maker in the contest.
The Jacket women will take another shot at their first PAC win on Saturday, Dec. 5, when they host Bethany. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
