WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 10) – The Waynesburg baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday when they split a pair of games with Trine (Ind.) University at the Russ Matt Baseball Invitational.
The Yellow Jackets took game one by a final score of 3-2 thanks to some late-inning heroics. Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh frame, the Jackets went to work against Thunder pitcher Lauren Parr.
With one out on the board, junior Kasey Eutsey walked and junior Andrew Spargur followed by reaching base on an error. With two men on, All-American second baseman Wes White Jr stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run triple to tie the game at 2-2.
While there was plenty of excitement surrounding the game-tying hit, the game-winning tally was much more anti-climatic as Parr balked, which allowed White to trot home and end the game.
Sophomore Pat Ehrin picked up the win on the mound for Waynesburg as he worked a scoreless top of the seventh. The Emsworth native relieved freshman Chris Dittmar, who put together his strongest performance of the season, working six innings of two-run ball. He yielded six hits and a walk, while striking out three.
The Jackets were led at the plate by White and sophomore Anthony Defilippo, who had two hits each. Defilippo doubled to go along with a single, while White added a single to his two-run triple.
Eutsey reached base a team-high three times on a single and two walks.
Parr took the loss, who also worked just one inning.
Unfortunately for the Jackets, things didn't go nearly as well in game two as the Thunder rolled for six runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to an 8-2 victory.
Waynesburg took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Spargur was singled in by sophomore Rob Cool Jr.
Trine responded with a run in the bottom of the first and took the lead with a tally in the bottom of the third. Waynesburg was able to tie the game in the top of the fifth when freshman Bill Hanning was hit by a pitch and Cool drove him in with a double.
The Thunder was quick to respond, however, as they drilled the Jackets for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, which closed up the scoring.
Junior Bryan Leones suffered the loss after working four innings in which he gave up six runs. Junior Zac Rhoades and freshman Kenny Grant got some work out of the bullpen. Grant put forth a solid performance, tossing 1.2 innings of shutout baseball.
White had another multi-hit performance against the Thunder as he went two-for-four with a pair of singles. Cool went two-for-three with a double and a single; Hanning went two-for-three and reached base a third time when he was hit by a pitch; and Eutsey got on twice with a single and a hit-by-pitch.
Sophomore Zach Bour worked 2.3 innings of relief to pick up the win for Trine.
Waynesburg (2-5) will face Cazenovia (N.Y.) in a double-header on Thursday, March 12.
