Jacket women stifle Franciscan in 1-0 win

Women's soccer gets season off on right foot with victory over the Barons

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – Sophomore goalkeeper Katrina Kelly was outstanding in net and junior midfielder Danielle Danhires (pictured above) gave the Yellow Jackets all the offense they needed as they opened the 2009 season with a 1-0 win over Franciscan on Tuesday.

The game was held under the lights of John F. Wiley Stadium, which illuminated Danhires' score, which came off of a feed from senior Katie Gaspich with 16:32 to go in the first half.

Along with a stout Jacket defense, Kelly made sure the lone tally held up, as she made 12 saves on the night, including two tough stops as the game winded down.

Second-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) forward Courtney Ebersole led the team in shots with four.

Along with getting the season off to a good start, the win over the Barons (0-1) avenges a 2-0 loss the Jackets suffered at Franciscan last year. Waynesburg will try to get to 2-0 on Saturday, when they host Pitt-Greensburg. The game is scheduled to get going at 1 p.m.
