Women's tennis drops road contest to Goucher

Gophers pick up 8-1 win over Jackets

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team nearly ended the season-opening winning streak of Goucher (Md.) College on Saturday.


However, the Gophers were able to win some close matches that ultimately led to the Yellow Jackets dropping an 8-1 road match. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 1-3 on the season, while Goucher improves to 3-0.

 

The senior duo of Allie Horochak and Jess Mally picked up a Jacket victory at third doubles by dropping Mara Bergman and Addie Maxwell by the final of 8-5.

 

The crucial contests in the match came at third and sixth singles, where the Gophers took a pair hard-fought victories. Horochak and Bergman battled at the number-three spot to the tune of a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) final score. At the number-six spot, sophomore Kelsey Diesel fought hard, but fell 6-1, 2-6 1-0 (10-8) to Alyssa Zick.

 

The Jackets will try to get back on the winning track on Thursday, Sept. 24, when they host Washington & Jefferson for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match that is scheduled to get started at 3 p.m.
