WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 23) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team battled through three exciting sets against Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown.
Unfortunately, W&J was able to win the first two sets of the match and the Yellow Jackets couldn't complete a comeback as they fell 3-1. The loss dropped the Jackets to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in PAC action. The Presidents improved to 7-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference play after posting scores of 25-19, 25-18, 26-28, 25-20.
The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman setter Carly Smithyman and sophomore outside hitter Jordan Barton, who both recorded double-doubles. Smithyman recorded her first collegiate double-double after piling up a team-best 27 assists to go along with 10 digs. Barton put together her third double-double of the 2009 season after racking up 12 kills and 11 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Carly Schubert paced the Jacket attack with 17 kills on 32 attempts (.469 attack percentage). Junior libero Rachell Storm took her usual spot as the team's top defender after piling up a team-high 37 digs. Freshman Presley Cupp chipped in 20 digs.
Freshman middle hitter Shannon Langworthy proved to be quite a defensive force at the net after piling up a season-high eight total blocks, including six solo stuffs.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Grove City to face the host Wolverines and Thiel in a PAC tri-match.
