BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team got their first win of the season on Thursday when they traveled to Bethany and beat the Bison 6-3 in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener.
A big reason for the win was the play of a couple of Yellow Jacket newcomers. First-year sophomore Rebekah Reyes and freshman Stephanie Ball both went 2-0 on the day. The duo teamed up to pick up a victory over Sarah Wood and Jamie Taylor at number-one doubles by the score of 8-5.
Seniors Allie Horochak and Jess Mally added a win at third doubles, beating Michelle Lancaster and Kirstie Pomilio 8-3.
Reyes won at first singles by downing Wood 7-5, 6-0, and Ball chipped in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Taylor. The Jackets' other singles wins came courtesy of sophomores Jessica Kody (6-2, 6-0 over Andrea Witzman) and Kelsey Diesel (6-1, 6-2 over Pomilio).
With the win, Waynesburg is now 1-1 on the season, while the Bison fell to 0-1.
The Jackets are off until Sept. 17, when they host conference powerhouse and defending PAC champion Grove City. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
