GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 7) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team showed tremendous heart when they traveled to Thiel for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) scrap with the Tomcats on Thursday night.
The Yellow Jackets were able to beat the Tomcats 62-54. The win improved Waynesburg's overall record to 5-7 overall, and bumped their PAC mark up to 2-3. The Tomcats dropped to 3-8 on the year and 0-3 in the conference.
Senior Johnna Deco led the charge with a career and game-high 20 points in the win. She also pulled down nine rebounds and swiped four steals.
Waynesburg opened up the game with an 11-5 run over the first 8:27 of play. The Jackets continued to lead for the majority of the first half and took a 30-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was a continuation of the first 20 hard fought minutes of the contest. The Jackets were able to increase their advantage by as many as 10 points on several different situations, but let it evaporate with just under six minutes to go when Thiel took 50-49 lead.
After giving up lead, the Yellow Jackets responded by out-scoring their hosts 13-4 over the final few minutes to secure a win.
Along with Deco's big night, freshman forward Brittany Spencer put together a double-double effort to help lead Waynesburg to victory. The Baltimore native racked up 10 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore Morgan Hoone efficiently scored 15 points on four-of-five shooting from the floor. She was three-of-four from beyond the three-point arc.
Thiel was led by Kasey Landis' team-best 14 points.
Waynesburg out-rebounded Thiel by a 35-26 margin, and also held a big advantage from the foul line. While the Jackets connected on 15-of-23 from the stripe, Thiel managed just three makes on six attempts.
The Yellow Jackets will need to be at their best on Saturday, when they return home to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday to face nationally-ranked Thomas More. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
