WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 23) – The last time Waynesburg University and Frostburg State met on the gridiron, the Yellow Jackets beat the Bobcats 21-7 at the end of the 2006 season.
Apparently, during those four years apart, Waynesburg didn't forget how to take down their non-conference opponents from the state of Maryland. The proof was in the Jackets' 41-7 win on Saturday at John F. Wiley Stadium. With the victory, Waynesburg improved to 5-2 on the year, while the Bobcats dropped to 1-6.
Waynesburg received the opening kickoff and promptly marched down the field for the first points of the game. Junior running back Justin Falcon capped a six-play, 64-yard march to the FSU end zone and put his team up 6-0. The extra point try by sophomore Jon Storck was blocked.
The Jackets maintained their one-score lead until early in the second half, when the Bobcats struck pay dirt on a five-yard touchdown hookup between quarterback Josh Volpe and fullback Derek Sheely. The ensuing extra point gave Frostburg a 7-6 edge, which was their last lead of the game.
Three drives later, the Bobcats were forced to punt. Senior Troy Garove fielded the Chris Karolenko kick and sprinted 72 yards the other way for his first collegiate touchdown. After Storck tacked on the extra point, Waynesburg was ahead 13-7 with more good things to come.
Garove's six points were the first of 35 unanswered points piled up by the Jackets. Waynesburg built up their first multi-score lead of the afternoon just before halftime when senior quarterback Brad Dawson found sophomore tight end Adam Moses for his team-leading sixth touchdown catch of the year. After Storck knocked the PAT through, the Jackets held a 20-7 lead with just three seconds left until halftime.
The home team kept the pressure on their guests from Frostburg in the second half. After neither team found much offensive rhythm for the majority of the third quarter, Dawson struck again by finding his other tight end, senior Zach Fatigante for an eight-yard touchdown strike. Another Storck extra point moved Waynesburg ahead 27-7.
On the very next possession, the Jacket defense decided to get in on the scoring as sophomore defensive back Bryan Gary intercepted a Geoff Suddath pass and took off on a 50-yard run the other way for a score. After Storck added the PAT, Waynesburg found itself ahead 34-7.
The Jacket offense came back on the field after another Gary interception and marched 60 yards on 11 plays for the game's final points. Freshman running back Dominick Moore hammered the final nail into the coffin with a four-yard scoring run, his team-best seventh of the season, to move the Yellow Jackets ahead 41-7. Storck's final kick of the day made it 42-7 and Waynesburg celebrated its third-straight victory.
Dawson led the Jacket offense by throwing for 232 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-25 passing. He also led a balanced Jacket rushing attack with a game-high 50 yards on three carries.
Dawson's favorite target on the day was senior wide receiver Jeff Young, who pulled in five catches for 91 yards. Moses added four grabs for 61 yards and a score. Sophomore Christian Jackson also recorded four catches, which went for 52 yards.
Frostburg was led by sophomore wide receiver Anthony Young, who snared a game-high seven balls for 143 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Alex Menton paced all players with nine total tackles, including four solo stops, while junior defensive lineman #Darryl Moore, Jr.# picked up two tackles for loss.
Waynesburg held big advantages in rushing (142 to 81) and total yards (403 to 301) on their way to the win. The Jackets head out on their final road game of the season next weekend when they travel to Saint Vincent to face the Bearcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
