Women's soccer drops hard fought game to W&J

Yellow Jackets score late, but fall 2-1 to Presidents

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 9) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team played right with visiting Washington & Jefferson through a half of play on Saturday at John F. Wiley Stadium.

After neither team scored in the opening period, the Presidents were able to net a pair of goals to set themselves up for a 2-1 win over the Yellow Jackets. With the win, W&J stays on top of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) at 3-0. They are also 8-4 overall. Waynesburg falls to 6-5-2 on the season and 0-3 in conference action.

Trailing 2-0 with just five minutes left to play, freshman Susie Godwin was finally able to sneak a ball past W&J keeper Stephanie Saussol. Unfortunately, a frantic Jacket rally came up empty and Waynesburg lost a third-straight one-goal game.

Junior Katrina Kelly played all 90 minutes in net and made 11 saves on the afternoon.

Though the Jackets were unable to pick up their first conference victory, the day was still a success as they held their annual “Kick Pancreatic Cancer” fund raiser. All proceeds from concessions and raffle sales will go to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Waynesburg will take another shot at a PAC win on Oct. 12, when it travels to Saint Vincent to face the Bearcats.
