Pioneers pull away in second half to down Jackets 80-56

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 15) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team ran into a red hot Marietta squad and couldn't find a way to cool off the visiting Pioneers during an 80-56 loss at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

The Yellow Jackets (3-4) were still very much in the game at halftime, trailing 38-28. They cut the lead down to seven (38-31) on a three-pointer by senior guard Erik Noone early in the second period, but Marietta (8-0) responded with a 6-0 run to go up 44-31. The visitors never led by fewer than 12 points for the rest of the night.

Waynesburg was led offensively by sophomore center Kurt Bonnet, who dropped in a team-high 12 points off the bench. Sophomore guard/forward Aaron Cromwell added 11. The Pioneers were led by junior Trevor Halter, who poured a game-high 20 points.

The Jackets will have to rebound quickly from the defeat as they return to action in just two days when they head to Rochester, N.Y. to take part in the two-day Harold J. Brodie Tournament. Waynesburg will face the host team from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Friday, Dec. 17, then play again on Saturday, Dec. 18.
