Baseball team rolls past Westminster in home PAC game

Yellow Jackets pound out 22 hits in 15-3 win over Titans

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 7) – The Waynesburg University baseball team emphatically snapped out of a six-game losing streak by blowing out Westminster 15-3 in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Wednesday.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 7-13 on the season and 3-6 in PAC play, while the Titans fell to 7-12 for the year and 4-4 in the conference.

The Jackets pounded out 22 hits on the afternoon, while their pitching and defense limited the Titans to just three base knocks. After a scoreless first inning, Westminster took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. However, it was the last time the visitors held the lead on the day and was a prelude to the Jackets' offensive outburst.

In the bottom of inning number two, Waynesburg sent 10 batters to the plate and collected four hits, including two-run singles by senior second baseman Wes White Jr and sophomore third baseman Corey Goeggelman. Junior first baseman Bill Hanning added a two-out RBI single that put his team up 5-1 before the Titans were finally able to stop the bleeding.

Still up 5-1, the Jackets added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Nick Berdine ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line that moved Waynesburg ahead 7-1. After the Titans made it 7-2 in the top of the fifth, the Jackets reached double digits on the scoreboard (10-2) with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

The home team tacked on a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, while Westminster added a tally in the top of the seventh to make the score 12-3. The Jackets put the icing on the cake by putting up three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, two of which came on a double by Goeggelman.

As one would expect, there were plenty of outstanding offensive performances in Waynesburg's 22-hit performance, which is the team's second-highest total of the season. Junior centerfielder Rob Cool Jr and sophomore catcher Noah Pust both went a perfect four-for-four at the dish. All eight hits were singles and Pust scored three runs.

Goeggelman drove in a team season-high five runs on the day, while White, Berdine and shortstop Anthony DeFilippo each picked up a pair of RBI. Junior first baseman Bill Hanning and senior designated hitter Bryan Leones racked up three hits each, while DeFilippo and Goeggelman both recorded a pair of base knocks in the win.

Freshman Anthony Longo improved to 2-1 on the mound for the season after working seven innings of two-hit baseball. He gave up three, only two of which were earned and struck out two. Senior Ryan Schell pitched the last two innings of the game and gave up just a hit and a walk while not allowing a run.

The Yellow Jackets will try to keep their bats white hot on Friday, April 9, when they travel to Bethany to face the Bison in a PAC contest.
