NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 25) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matches on Saturday, falling to the Westminster Titans (7-8, 2-0) and coming out victorious over the Chatham Cougars (2-11, 0-5).
In the opening match, the Yellow Jackets (6-8, 1-4) fell to the host school Westminster in three sets. Waynesburg came close to pulling out a first-set victory, but came up just short, losing 26-24. The final two sets were a different story as the Yellow Jackets dropped set two 25-18 and set three 25-16.
Match number two on the day paired Waynesburg with Chatham and brought a 3-1 win. The Yellow Jackets took set one 25-21 but fell behind early in set two and could not recover, falling 25-15. Waynesburg never trailed from there on out, taking set three 25-20 and the deciding fourth set 25-16.
Freshman Shayla Mitrik got the start libero against Chatham and produced 22 digs. Junior outside hitter Jordan Barton paced the Yellow Jackets with 16 total kills between both matches. Sophomore defensive specialist Presley Cupp had a very effective serving day with four service aces and a .923 serving percentage. Sophomore setter Carly Smithyman led the way in assists, yielding 30 in all.
The Yellow Jackets are next in action Wednesday night when they host La Roche College for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.
