Women's volleyball drops tough one to Grove City

Waynesburg wins set one, but falls 3-2 to Wolverines

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 8) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to Grove City in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both teams on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Thing started well for the Yellow Jackets (2-4, 0-1) as they came back from four points late to take set one by the score of 25-23. However, the Wolverines (2-3, 1-0) rebounded by taking set two 25-21 and set three 25-17. With the match on the line, the Jackets showed tremendous effort to take set four 25-19. Unfortunately, Grove City had enough left in the tank to win set five 15-10 and take the match.

Though it came in a loss, Waynesburg got a tremendous offensive effort from junior Jordan Barton, who racked up a season-high 18 kills on 45 attempts for a solid .356 attack percentage. She completed her first double-double of the season with 12 digs and added a team-high three total blocks (one solo).

Freshman Katelyn Blaich paced the defensive effort with a team-high 25 digs. Sophomore Presley Cupp chipped in 20 digs. As they have done through the early part of the year, the sophomore/freshman combo of Carly Smithyman and Natalie Ranallo split the work at setter with positive results. Both Smithyman and Ranallo recorded a team-high 19 assists on the evening. Junior middle hitter Lauren Wagner added nine kills on the night.

The Jackets will try to end a four-match losing streak on Monday, Sept. 13, when they head to La Roche for a road match with the Red Hawks.
