LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 12) – For the second-straight game, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team faced one of the top two squads in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) when it traveled to Saint Vincent to face the Bearcats on Wednesday night.
The Yellow Jackets battled hard against SVC, but came up on the short end of a 73-64 score. With the loss, the Jackets fell to 10-4 on the season and 4-3 in PAC action. Saint Vincent improves to 13-1 overall and stayed unbeaten in conference action at 6-0.
Waynesburg trailed by just six (38-32) at the half, but the Bearcats were able to put the game away in the second period by out-scoring their opponents 35-32 over the final 20 minutes of play. The Cats enjoyed a strong shooting performance while connecting on 52 percent of their shots (28-of-54) from the floor. Waynesburg was unable to match its opponent's efficiency from the field and converted on just 21-of-62 field goal tries (33 percent).
Junior point guard Hannah Hunter paced the Waynesburg offense with a team-high 18 points. Sophomore guard Jessi Drayer added 15 points off the bench and senior forward Elisha Jones chipped in 14 points. Sophomore forward Paige Pearce pulled down a Waynesburg-best six rebounds, while Jones and Drayer recorded five boards a piece.
Having lost back-to-back games for the first time this year, Waynesburg will look to return to its winnings ways on Saturday, when the Yellow Jackets square off with another perennial conference power, Washington & Jefferson. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
