WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 14) – The Waynesburg wrestling team won nine bouts on the night and rolled to a 41-6 win over visiting Mercyhurst North East on Friday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets (8-2-1) opened up with decision wins at 125 pounds and 133 pounds courtesy of sophomore Alex Crown (125) and junior Rico Borz (133) to take a 6-0 lead. The Saints (2-6) got their only win of the night with a pin at 141 pounds to tie the match at 6-6.
From there, the Jackets rolled to seven-straight victories, including four falls, to close out the night. Freshman Luke Lohr (149), junior Garrett Johnston (157), junior Jared Roberts (174) and sophomore Cody Catalina (184) picked up the pins, none of which took longer than 3:39 to accomplish. Junior 165-pounder Alex Evanoff added a 17-2 technical fall win to the evening.
Waynesburg also picked up decision victories by freshmen Jake Linn at 197 and Brandon Fedorka at heavyweight to wrap up the evening.
Both Waynesburg and Mercyhurst North East will be in action tomorrow morning as two of the seven teams taking part in the first annual Waynesburg Invitational. The event is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
