WASHINGTON, Pa. (Nov. 1) – Tuesday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) women's soccer playoff game between Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson proved the old adage that it's better to have quality over quantity. Even though the visiting fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets were out-shot 17-5 by the top-seeded Presidents, the Jackets were the only team to find the back of the net in a 1-0 upset victory for Waynesburg.
With the win, Waynesburg (15-4-1) punched its ticket to the PAC championship game for a showdown with second-seeded Thomas More on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Crestview Hills, Ky. The Saints beat third-seeded Grove City 2-0 on Tuesday.
The Jackets scored the game-deciding goal during the 22
nd minute of action when sophomore
Susie Godwin notched her biggest tally of her collegiate career. The second-year starter took a feed from senior
Courtney Ebersole and beat W&J keeper Stephanie Saussol to make it 1-0 Jackets. The goal was Godwin's eighth on the year, which is the third highest total on the team. Ebersole's assist was her seventh helper of the year.
The Waynesburg defense combined with senior goalkeeper
Katrina Kelly to make the slim lead hold up over the remainder of the game. Though the Jackets were out-shot by a wide margin, W&J only put three attempts on goal, all of which were stopped by Kelly, who recorded her 10
th shutout of the season. Waynesburg also notched three shots on goal. The Presidents also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks and committed just seven fouls to the Jackets' 10.
The win was Waynesburg's first postseason victory this century. It was also the Jackets' firstwin over the Presidents since 2001.
