SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 16) – Thanks to outstanding performances from several freshmen, the Waynesburg wrestling team upset Shippensburg, the number-20 team in Division II, by a 21-15 final score on Wednesday night.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) won the opening match of their dual season over the Raiders, despite missing four regular starters for various reasons. It was the third-straight victory for Waynesburg over Shippensburg, which started out with junior 125-pounder
Alex Crown receiving a forfeit.
The Jackets' lead was short-lived, however, as Shippensburg bounced back with a decision win at 133 and a pin at 141 to take a 9-6 lead. Waynesburg's first big freshman victory came at 149 pounds, where
Chris Milligan earned a 6-2 triumph over James Reilly to tie the match at 9-9. The Jackets added a crucial win at 157 pounds where senior Garrett Johnston defeated Kenny Stank 4-0 to put his team up 12-9.
Sophomore
Sam Lombardo added to the Jackets' advantage with a wild 18-14 win at 165 pounds to push the Jackets' lead to 15-9. After Shippensburg trimmed the deficit back down to three points with a decision victory at 174 pounds, the visitors put the match out of reach with back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 pounds. Junior
Cody Catalina made it 18-9 Waynesburg with a 10-4 victory over Tyler Zittle and freshman 197-pounder
Patrick Jennings came up huge with a hard-fought 2-0 triumph over Daniel Fultz.
Shippensburg ended the night with a decision win at 285 pounds, but it was too little, too late for the Raiders. Waynesburg will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday, Nov. 19, when they will face three tough opponents in 17
th-ranked York, 29
th-ranked Messiah and a solid Division II team in Lake Erie College at a quad-match hosted by Messiah.
