GRANTHAM, Pa. (Nov. 19) – It was a frustrating day for the Waynesburg University wrestling team, which took part in a quad-match at Messiah College on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets were just points away from going 2-1 in three matches and upsetting a pair of ranked Division III opponents. Instead, several close decisions went against the Orange and Black, which dropped all three matches.

The Jackets (1-3) opened the day with a heart-breaking 19-13 loss to the host Falcons that featured three overtime bouts, two of which were won by Messiah. That defeat was followed by a 31-9 loss to Division II Lake Erie, which featured the Storm nailing down pins in the final three bouts of the match. Finally, Waynesburg ended the afternoon with an 18-15 defeat at the hands of the 17th-ranked squad from York College. The Jackets led by three points going into the heavyweight bout, but the Spartans scored a pin to take the match.

Waynesburg was led on the day by senior 157-pounder Garrett Johnston, who posted a flawless 3-0 record, with all three wins coming by decision. Junior 125-pounder Alex Crown, sophomore Colton Blumer and sophomore 165-pounder Sam Lombardo notched two wins each on the day.

A banged up Jacket team will look to get healthy over the next 11 days as it prepares for another road match, this time at Division-II opponent West Liberty State, on Nov. 30. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the team is expected to get sophomore heavyweight Brandon Fedorka, a national qualifier as a freshman, back into the starting lineup as football season wrapped up at the same time the Jacket mat men were competing in Grantham.
