WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 30) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 61-49 victory over the Thiel Tomcats on Wednesday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak and improved the Jackets' overall record to 3-2 with a 1-0 mark in conference play while the Tomcats fell to 0-6 on the season and 0-1 in PAC play.
After Waynesburg opened up a 26-23 halftime lead, the Tomcats clawed all the way back, taking a brief one point lead (33-32) with 16 minutes left to play. The Jackets halted Thiel's run quickly, as they went on a 22-8 run from that point to take a commanding 14-point lead with under five minutes remaining before going on to the 12-point win.
The home team out-performed their opposition in several offensive categories, including field goal percentage (35 percent to 32 percent), free throw percentage (60 percent to 37 percent) and rebounding (55 to 38).
The Jackets were led by junior guard
Brittany Spencer, who erupted for her first double-double of the season, pouring in a game-high 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting. She also tallied game-highs in rebounds (12) and steals (6). Junior forward Paige Pierce and senior
Hannah Hunter chipped in nine points each, while sophomore
Elaine Hasek added eight. Both Pierce and Hasek narrowly missed double-double of their own, as they each had nine rebounds.
The Tomcats were led by Kelly Muffley, who recorded 12 points in the loss.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, when they host Westminster College in a PAC showdown. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
