CLEVELAND, Ohio (Dec. 29) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team opened its two-day run at Case Western Reserve's Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets squared off with the host Spartans and dropped a 69-51 decision at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Jackets (2-9) found themselves on the wrong end of a 39-22 halftime score before playing a much tighter second half, which went to Case Western Reserve (8-2) by one point (30-29). Waynesburg's shooting struggles played a big role in the defeat. The visiting team managed to connect on just 23 percent of its tries from the floor (17-of-73), while the Spartans made a more efficient 45 percent of their shots (25-of-56).
Waynesburg was led by senior guard
Larry Alexander, who put up a team-high 12 points, and freshman forward
Jacob Fleegle, who chipped in nine. Case, which won its seventh-straight game, featured four double-digit scorers, including Julien Person, who poured in a game-best 16 points.
Waynesburg will play its final game of 2011 tomorrow afternoon when the Jackets face Regis (Mass.) College. The Pride (3-4) dropped an 86-60 decision to John Carroll during its first-round game on Thursday.
