WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 3) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team made a furious comeback attempt late in the second half against Westminster on Saturday night that erased a 12-point lead and put the Jackets in position to steal away a win.
Unfortunately, the Titans broke the hearts of their opponents with timely baskets, answering with field goals all three times that the Jackets were able to trim the lead to one point. In doing so, the Titans (2-4, 1-1 PAC) secured a 74-71 win. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play for the season.
Westminster opened up a 44-35 lead at halftime and built their advantage to 12 points (61-49) with 11:23 to go in the game. A pair of three-pointers, one from freshman
Jacob Fleegle and another from senior
Larry Alexander cut the lead to 65-63 with 3:30 showing on the clock. Unfortunately, the Titans' Ben Donlow was too much for the Jackets to handle down the stretch, as he scored seven of his game-high 29 points in the final three minutes to lead the Titans to a win.
Lou Galante had a solid night on the court with a team-high 17 points on six-of-11 shooting from the field while also snagging five rebounds. Fleegle added 14 points on the night, while junior center
Kurt Bonnet pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Waynesburg will try to rebound quickly from their heart-breaking loss as they return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they travel to Geneva College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
