WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 60-56 win over a feisty Westminster team on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a big halftime lead and held on to beat the Titans for a third-straight time.
Waynesburg (4-2, 2-0) opened up a 15-5 lead over the first six minutes of action and controlled Westminster (0-6, 0-2) for the majority of the first half. The Jackets led by as many as 14 (32-18) before the two teams went to the locker room.
The home team built its advantage up to as many as 16 points (39-23) in the early portion of the second period. However, the visiting team wasn't going to go away quietly and a 10-2 run trimmed a 42-29 Waynesburg lead to just a five-point advantage (44-39). Down by just two baskets, Westminster took off on a 10-3 surge that gave the Blue and White a 49-47 advantage with just over six minutes to play.
The home team showed its mettle by gathering itself and answering with a 10-0 run that turned the two-point deficit into an eight-point lead (57-49) with 2:32 left to play. The Titans were able to pull as close as three points (58-55) with 38 seconds left to play, but a pair of free throws from junior guard
Jessi Drayer helped sew up the win.
Drayer's clutch work at the charity stripe accounted for two of her game-high 21 points that she compiled over a game-high 38 minutes played. Senior point guard
Hannah Hunter added 10 points, two assists and five steals to the winning effort, while junior guard
Brittany Spencer, sophomore forward
Elaine Hasek and junior forward
Paige Pearce added nine, eight and eight points, respectively. Drayer led all Waynesburg players with six rebounds.
Westminster was led by Emily Dolsak's 12 points.
The Yellow Jackets will go for their third-straight victory on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they hit the road to take on Geneva. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
