Yellow Jacket baseball team rolls to road win at Geneva

Jackets take down Golden Tornadoes 9-2

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 15) – The Waynesburg University baseball team got its three-game weekend series with Geneva College off to a fantastic start on Friday. The two teams locked horns in a nine-inning game at Geneva, which the Yellow Jackets won by the final score of 9-2.

With the win, the Jackets' second in their last three games, Waynesburg's record jumped up to 8-16 overall. The Golden Tornadoes fell to 14-13 for the season. The victory was the Yellow Jackets' most one-sided of the season, and it got started with a four-run second inning that moved the visiting team ahead 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets utilized some small ball to grab the early lead. Junior third baseman Tim Chilcote singled in the game's first run. Senior right fielder Brandon Myers made it 2-0 Waynesburg when he plated a run after reaching base on an error. Second baseman and lead-off hitter Corey Goeggelman drove in the game's third run with an RBI single, and the Jackets picked up their final score of the frame when senior shortstop Anthony DeFilippo walked with the bases loaded.

Geneva cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning, but the home team was shut out for the rest of the game and Waynesburg cruised to the victory from there with a run in the fifth, a run in the sixth and a big three-spot in the seventh. DeFilippo made it 5-2 in the top of the fifth when he doubled and eventually scored on an error. Goeggelman drove in his team's sixth (6-2) run of the contest with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Waynesburg put the final touches on the victory with their three-run seventh inning. With the bases loaded, junior designated hitter Nick Berdine smacked a two-run single that moved his team ahead 8-2. Freshman left fielder Dan Buzzard plated the game's final run with a sacrifice fly.

The Jackets not only out-hit the Tornadoes 10-5, but were helped out by four Geneva errors. That was more than enough offense for the junior pitching combination of lefty Ben Oviatt and righty Rob Baumgartel. Oviatt won his second start in a row by throwing seven innings, during which he gave up both runs while scattering five hits and five walks. Baumgartel tossed the final two innings of the game, during which he gave up no hits and just two walks.

Berdine, Chilcote, Myers and junior first baseman Brendan Scioscia led a balanced Waynesburg offense to victory with two hits each.

The Jackets return to Waynesburg tomorrow for a seven-inning doubleheader with Geneva. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
