WAYNESBURG, Pa (April, 21) – For the third time this week, Waynesburg baseball split a double header with a PAC conference foe. The Jackets won game one 5-4 before dropping game two 7-0.

Waynesburg is now 11-19 overall. The Tomcats are 15-14.

The Tomcats struck first in game one- using two singles and a walk issued by starter Ben Oviatt to load the bases in the first inning. One runner would cross home plate on a sacrifice fly, but it would be all Thiel would get.

The Jackets bats went to work in the bottom of the second scoring five runs on six hits. Noah Pust got things started with a single up the middle. Brendan Scioscia continued his hot streak, slapping a double to left, sending Pust to third. Nick Berdine laid a near-perfect bunt down the first base line, causing a defensive lapse that allowed Waynesburg to take a 1-0 lead.

Andrew Rose followed Berdine's lead and added his third RBI in two games on a base knock up the middle. Brandon Myers, Dan Buzzard, and Corey Goeggelman also added RBI's in the inning.

Waynesburg was in cruise control until the top of the sixth inning, when a solo home run by the Tomcats brought the score to 5-2. Waynesburg appeared to score a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth but a base-running error allowed for Thiel to get a crucial double-play to end the inning and the threat.

Thiel made it more of a game in the seventh, adding two runs with only one out. However, a heads up defensive play by Anthony DeFilippo to throw out the tying run at third base for the second out of the inning, effectively ending the threat. Oviatt struck out the final batter of the game, running his record to 4-0 on the season.

The Tomcats answered Waynesburg's bats in game two with starter Brad Bates, who threw a two-hit shutout to pick up the win by the score of 7-0. Bates went three and two thirds of no-hit baseball, as Noah Pust broke up the no-hitter with a base hit up the middle.

The Jackets managed just one more hit after that, a Mike Neckerman single in the fifth. Jackets starter Drew Heinle took the loss, going three and a third inning, allowing four runs on eight hits.

Noah Pust went two-for-five with a run scored in the twin bill, while Nick Berdine went two-for-six with a run scored and a RBI.

The Jackets will hit the road tomorrow, traveling to Thiel to play a third game. The nine inning affair will begin with first pitch at 1 p.m.
