Jacket baseball team ends season with home split

Waynesburg falls 10-4 to Saint Vincent, but rebounds with 18-5 triumph

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team wrapped up the 2011 season on Sunday with a home Mother's Day doubleheader against Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats took the opening game 10-4 and the Yellow Jackets responded with an 18-5 triumph to conclude their schedule. With the split, Waynesburg ends the year 14-24 overall and 9-12 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Saint Vincent ended 2011 with a 16-24 season mark and a 6-15 conference mark.

A big early inning during the opener put Waynesburg behind the eight ball. With the score tied 1-1 after an inning of play, the Bearcats blew up for six runs in the top of the second and never looked back. Senior Jesse Gonzalez started and took the loss after giving up seven runs in 1.1 innings of work. Sophomore Anthony Longo relieved the veteran righty and worked the final 5.2 innings, during which he gave up just three runs, two of which were earned.

Saint Vincent struck with a big early inning again in game two, but Waynesburg had the last laugh. With the Bearcats holding a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, the Jackets gave their home fans an impressive final offensive showing to close up the 2011 campaign.

Waynesburg pounded the Saint Vincent pitchers for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth and seven more in the bottom of the sixth. The Jackets slammed three homeruns in the fifth, including three-run shots by senior left fielder Rob Cool, Jr. and junior first baseman Brendon Scioscia. Junior designated hitter Nick Berdine tacked on a solo shot in the bit inning.

The home team got plenty of help in the sixth from their opponents in the form of five walks and two hit batsmen. The late offensive outbursts sealed up a season-ending victory on the mound for senior hurler Tim Knight, who worked all seven innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits and one walk.

During the day's 22-run effort, senior shortstop Anthony DeFilippo connected for five hits in seven at-bats. He also drove in a team-high five runs and scored two more. Freshman Andrew Rose went five-for-eight with a homerun, four RBI and a team-high five runs scored. Scioscia also picked up four RBI, while Berdine, Cool and junior Noah Pust scored three runs each.
