WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 24) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team went 1-1during a home tri-match that featured Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivals Bethany and Washington & Jefferson.
The Yellow Jackets split their two matches, first beating W&J 3-2 in the opening match of the day. They followed that up by dropping a 3-0 contest to Bethany in the final contest of the day. With the split, the Jackets' overall record stands at 7-6 overall and 2-4 in PAC play.
Waynesburg's win was a back-and-forth contest with the home team taking the first set 25-20. After W&J (5-9, 0-5) bounced back to take the next two sets 25-14, 25-19, the Jackets claimed victory in a must-win set four by the score of 25-20, setting up the match-deciding set five. The home team sealed up the hard-fought win with a 15-9 victory in the final set.
Senior middle hitter
Lauren Wagner continued her solid season with a team-high 15 kills against W&J. Senior outside hitter
Jordan Barton also reached double digits in successful attacks with 11 in the win. Both Wagner and Barton completed double-double efforts with 13 and 15 digs, respectively. Speaking of digs, junior
Presley Cupp paced the Waynesburg defensive effort with a squad-best 25. Sophomore
Natalie Ranallo racked up a team-best 35 assists in the win.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as well for Waynesburg in their late match against Bethany, which improved to 16-1 overall and 6-1 in conference action. The Bison swept three sets by the scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-17.
Barton led Waynesburg with seven kills, while Cupp totaled 10 digs and Ranallo added 11 assists.
The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they return to non-conference action with a road match at La Roche. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
