WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 14) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team played well enough in Saturday's Presidents Athletic Conference showdown to lead Grove City College with under six minutes left in the game.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines were able to go on an 8-3 run as time expired and take down the Yellow Jackets 56-53. The loss drops Waynesburg to 3-13 on the season and 0-7 in PAC play, while Grove City improves to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
After the Wolverines took a narrow 32-31 lead into the locker room at halftime, Waynesburg grabbed a 50-48 advantage with 5:48 remaining in the contest. The Jackets and Wolverines exchanged baskets, as the home team found itself down 55-53 with five seconds remaining.
After a Waynesburg timeout, junior guard
Ben Altmeyer drove hard to the basket, looking to tie the game with a lay-up. Unfortunately, the Grove City defense was in position, forcing Altmeyer to alter his shot, and the Jackets' hopes of overtime rimmed out.
Though they came in a loss, Waynesburg got two double-digit scoring performances on the night. Junior forward
Lou Galante led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while senior guard
Larry Alexander added 11. Grove City was powered by forward Kris Verderber, who racked up 15 points in the win.
Freshman forward
Jason Propst led the Jackets on the boards with a team-high eight rebounds, while junior forward
Kurt Bonnet added six boards. Waynesburg returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18, when the Orange and Black travels to Washington, Pa. to take on the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
