Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 21) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team built up a 10-point halftime lead at Thiel on Saturday and looked primed to stay tied atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings. Unfortunately, the Tomcats had different ideas as they came all the way back to steal away a 64-62 victory.

With the loss, the Jackets fell to 13-4 on the season and 8-2 in PAC play. Thiel improved to .500 in conference action (5-5) and moved its overall record to 5-12. The defeat ends a five-game Waynesburg winning streak over the Tomcats.

Waynesburg took control of the game early on after breaking up a 6-6 tie during the opening minutes of the first half. With 16:45 to go in the first period, the Yellow Jackets took off on an 18-2 run over the next seven minutes that gave them a 16-point lead (24-8) with 9:41 showing on the clock. The Jackets continued to dominate the home team over the final portion of the first half, building up advantages as large as 19 points (33-14). However, the Cats worked their way back into the game by out-scoring Waynesburg 13-4 over the final four minutes of play and closing the deficit to 37-27.

After junior forward Paige Pearce nailed a three-pointer to open the second half, Waynesburg regained a 13-point lead at 40-27. However, the Jacket offense slowed down  at that point and Thiel continued to make shots during a 16-7 run that pulled the Tomcats to within four points (47-43) after 7:39 of second-half action. The visitors finally re-discovered their offensive touch at that point and cranked out a nine-point run that re-established a comfortable 13-point lead (56-43) with just under 10 minutes left to play.

Following the Waynesburg surge, momentum swung back to the Tomcats, who out-scored the Jackets 11-3 over the next 2:12 to make it 59-54 with 7:31 left to play. After junior guard Brittany Spencer's layup put her team back ahead by seven, Thiel continued its late surge by scoring eight of the next nine points to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:32 left to play. The Tomcats scored the game-deciding basket with 13 seconds left to play and survived a last-second three-point attempt for Waynesburg to pick up the win.

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior point guard Hannah Hunter, who poured in a team-high 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Pearce added 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore center Emily Miller chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Elaine Hasek pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for the Jackets.

Waynesburg will try to return to its winnings ways on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when the Yellow Jackets travel to New Wilmington to face off with Westminster. The Jackets beat the Titans in the two teams' first meeting this year 60-56. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
