Jacket baseball travels to Bethany

Waynesburg bats go cold in 9-3 loss to Bison

Box Score

BETHANY, W.Va. (March 30) – The Waynesburg University baseball team played its sixth-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road game at Bethany College on Friday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets struggled to get their bats going as they dropped a 9-3 decision to the Bison.

Waynesburg (11-7, 2-4) managed just five hits against Bethany (7-9, 4-5) and also committed three errors that led to four unearned runs for the home team. After a scoreless first inning, the Bison posted a pair of runs on Jacket senior starter Ben Oviatt, who entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record in his previous five starts. Waynesburg rebounded with its first run of the day in the top of the third, when junior shortstop Kyle Sasala singled in senior right fielder Mike Neckerman to trim the deficit down to 2-1.

Unfortunately, the Jackets were unable to get any closer than that one-run deficit for the rest of the afternoon as Bethany tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 9-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. Junior first baseman Bobby Hartman drove in the final two runs of the game on a sixth-inning fielder's choice and an eighth-inning groundout.

Oviatt suffered his first loss of the season after giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks over four innings of work. First-year hurlers Sean Boyle, Mike Pavlic and Cody Scruggs pitched the final four innings of the loss. Pavlic and Scruggs threw a combined three scoreless innings and gave up just two total hits.

Sasala gathered two of Waynesburg's five hits, while senior second baseman Corey Goeggelman scored a team-high two runs and Hartman led the team with two RBI.

The same two teams meet up tomorrow in Waynesburg for a seven-inning doubleheader. Prior to first pitch, which is scheduled for 1 p.m., The Yellow Jackets will honor their nine senior players.
