WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 17) – The Waynesburg University baseball team picked up two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victories by sweeping Grove City on Tuesday afternoon in Waynesburg. The Yellow Jackets (18-13, 8-9) opened up with a 5-4 walk-off win over the Wolverines (5-21, 3-11) in game one, and followed that with a16-5 victory in game two.

During the opener, Grove City got out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, using three hits, a walk and an error to manufacture their runs. It wasn't until the bottom of the third inning that the Jackets offense gained any ground, as Waynesburg got on the scoreboard with a RBI single by junior right5 fielder Adam Horning. Horning came around to score the second run of the inning thanks to an RBI groundout by senior designated hitter Corey Goeggelman, making it 4-2 in favor of Grove City.

The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Bobby Hartman roped a two-out single to left field bringing up senior leftfielder Nick Berdine. Berdine tied the game up with one pitch, crushing it over the left field wall for his third home run of the year that tied the game up at 4-4.

After Jackets hurler Ben Oviatt (8-2) retired the Wolverines in order in the top of the seventh, Freshman second baseman Joseph Smith started things off with a single up the middle. After Smith stole second, sophomore Andrew Rose laid down a bunt single to give the Jackets runners on the corners and one out on the board. Junior shortstop Kyle Sasala ended the game by driving a pitch deep to centerfield, scoring Smith from third and giving Waynesburg the win.

Senior pitcher Ben Oviatt got the win on the mound, throwing all seven innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits, and no walks. Sasala led the Jackets at the plate by going two-for-three with the game-winning RBI. Hartman, Smith and senior centerfielder Mike Neckerman all joined Sasala by picking up multiple hits.

Waynesburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two, and poured it on by scoring two runs in the second, one in the third and five more in the fourth and fifth to build up a 12-2 lead after five innings of action.
The Jackets added three more in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 16-5.

While the offense stole the show, junior righty Anthony Longo was stellar on the hill while getting his fourth win of the season (4-2). The Stuebenville, Ohio native gave up three earned runs on nine hits over five-and-two-thirds innings. Senior Tim Chilchote relieved Longo, throwing one-and-a-third scoreless innings.

Berdine added two more hits to another impressive game. The senior went two-for-three with his second home run of the afternoon, added two runs scored and three RBI. Smith went three-for-four with a grand slam, which was his first collegiate home run, one run scored and six RBI.

Waynesburg's 16 runs scored in the late game were the most for the Jackets since their final game of 2011, which was an 18-5 win over Saint Vincent.

Waynesburg will try to stretch its current winning streak to three or even four games when they travel to Penn-State Altoona on Friday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
