ALTOONA, Pa. (April 20) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Penn State Altoona for its final non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action of the season on Friday. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 13-5 win in game one, but suffered a heart-breaking walk-off 7-6 loss in the late game for a split.
The Jackets (19-14) took advantage of four Altoona (14-20) errors, six walks and four passed balls to put up 13 runs on just nine hits in the opener. Things started quickly for the visitors, who put up five runs in the top of the first inning on just one hit, which was a two-run single by freshman second baseman
Joseph Smith. They were aided by three walks, an error, a wild pitch, a passed ball and two balks.
Altoona tied the game up with three runs in the bottom of the inning, a fourth in the bottom of the third and a fifth in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-5 heading into the top of the fifth. However, the visiting team put the game out of reach with two runs in the top of the fifth, four in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh to bring about the final score of 13-5.
Senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine belted his third homerun in as many games and his fifth of the season as part of a two-for-three day with three RBI and two runs scored. Smith added three RBI of his own after going one-for-two with a run scored. Senior designated hitter
Brendan Scioscia and junior first baseman
Bobby Hartman chipped in two hits each to go along with three and two runs scored, respectively.
Sophomore
Zach Kreke improved to 4-4 on the season after scattering 11 hits over a seven-inning complete-game effort. He yielded four earned runs, struck out two and walked one.
In game two, the two teams traded runs over the first two innings and the game remained tied at 1-1 going into the fourth inning. The Jackets briefly took the lead at 3-1 in the top of the fourth, but a three-spot from Altoona gave the home team a 4-3 edge going into the fifth inning. Waynesburg knotted the game up at 4-4 with a score in the top of the fifth and went ahead 6-4 with a two-spot in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, the Lions posted three runs during their time at the plate, including the game-winner on a two-out walk-off single.
Smith drove in three runs in the late game, despite not picking up a hit. He recorded two of the RBI on a beautiful sacrifice bunt. Scioscia, Hartman and junior right fielder
Adam Horning connected on two hits each during the loss.
Senior
Rob Baumgartel started on the mound and worked 3.1 innings for a no-decision. He allowed four runs, all earned, on three hits and five walks. Freshman
Mike Pavlic gave his team 2.2 strong innings of shutout relief.
Waynesburg returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday, April 25, when the Yellow Jackets travel to Grove City for a nine-inning showdown with the Wolverines. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
