Waynesburg baseball team rolls to home victory

Yellow Jackets combine stellar pitching effort with strong hitting in 13-0 win over Geneva

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 27) – The Waynesburg University baseball team won for a fifth time in its last six game by beating Geneva 13-0 in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Friday. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 21-14 on the season and 10-9 in PAC play, while the Golden Tornadoes fell to 14-20 for the year and 8-14 in the conference.

The Jackets pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon, while their pitching and defense limited the Golden Tornadoes to just seven base knocks. The Jackets scored early and often, as they took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a RBI groundout by junior first baseman Bobby Hartman and an RBI single by freshman second baseman Joseph Smith

In the bottom of inning number two, Waynesburg added to its lead as senior designated hitter Corey Goeggelman's sacrifice bunt plated a runner to make the score 3-0. After a scoreless third inning, the Jackets erupted for three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth after sending eight batters to the plate in the fourth and six in the fifth. Leading the way for the Jacket offense was senior left fielder Nick Berdine, who drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth and hit a three-run home run in the fifth, his PAC-leading sixth of the season.

Up 10-0 after five innings of play, the Jackets added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh when Berdine drove a single to right field that scored two and put the Jackets up 12-0. Sophomore pinch-hitter Andrew Rose hit an RBI double to centerfield to finish out the scoring.

The Jackets' 13 runs were more than enough for Waynesburg's senior starting pitcher Ben Oviatt, as he cruised to the complete-game, shutout victory to improve to 9-2 on the season. Oviatt threw all nine inning and scattered seven hits, while striking out two batters, who were the first and last batters of the day for the Tornadoes.

As one would expect, there were plenty of outstanding offensive performances in Waynesburg's 13-hit performance. Goeggelman, Berdine and senior catcher Brendan Scioscia  all had multi-hit games as Goeggelman went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and four runs scored, Scioscia went 2-for-3 with two walks, a hit by pitch, and four runs scored while Berdine went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, a home run and a game-high six RBIs.  Smith also drove in a pair of runs for the Jackets, while Rose, junior first baseman Bobby Hartman and senior third baseman Tim Chilchote all added an RBI in the win.

The Yellow Jackets will try to keep their bats hot tomorrow when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa to face the Golden Tornadoes in a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
