WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 3) – The Waynesburg University baseball team won its third-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Tuesday by taking a nine-inning decision from visiting Saint Vincent 9-4. With the win, the Yellow Jackets move to 5-4 in the PAC and 14-7 overall, while the Bearcats fell to 4-5 in conference action and 14-7 on the year.
Saint Vincent struck first under sunny skies with a solo homerun in the top of the first inning off senior Jacket starter
Ben Oviatt. That was the final run the lefty gave up until the top of the seventh frame. During the Bearcat scoreless streak, the Jacket bats caught fire and staked the home team to a commanding lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Jackets grabbed a two-run lead that they wouldn't relinquish with a three spot to go ahead 3-1. With two outs on the board, junior shortstop
Kyle Sasala singled and senior second baseman
Corey Goeggelman did the same to put two runners in scoring position after Goeggelman advanced to second on an errant throw. Senior catcher
Brendan Scioscia kept the hitting going with a two-run single that put the home team up 2-1. Junior first baseman
Bobby Hartman collected Waynesburg's fourth-straight hit, a triple, to plate Scioscia and make the score 3-1 Waynesburg.
The Jackets matched their production in the bottom of the fourth with four more runs to make the score 6-1. Saint Vincent errors played a big role in the inning as senior third baseman
Tim Chilcote singled and scored on an error during Sasala's at-bat. Senior designated hitter
Noah Pust scored on a passed ball during Goeggelman's at-bat in the inning. Goeggelman then proceeded to single in Sasala for the third run of the frame and the sixth of the game.
Already up five, the Jackets continued to pour it on with two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior right fielder
Adam Horning led off with a triple and didn't wait long to score as Pust lifted a sacrifice fly into the outfield grass. Sasala reached second on a two-base error before being driven home on an RBI single by Goeggelman that made the score 8-1 in favor of the home team.
Saint Vincent showed some life in the top of the seventh with three runs to make the score 8-4, but the Jackets had the last laugh by scoring the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh. Horning singled in senior centerfielder
Mike Neckerman , who walked and moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
The Jackets had a very productive day at the plate, out-hitting the Bearcats 14-to-eight. Included in those 14 hits were two doubles and two triples. Hartman led the charge by going three-for-five with both two-baggers and one of the triples to go along with an RBI. Goeggelman added a three-hit day with a run scored and two RBI. Sasala, Scioscia and Horning picked up two hits each, with Scioscia notching two RBI and Sasala scoring three runs.
Oviatt improved to 6-1 on the season by tossing seven solid innings. He gave up four runs, all earned, on seven hits and two walks. Sophomore
Zach Kreke worked the final two innings and didn't allow a run. The second-year righty gave up just a hit and a walk, while also notching a strikeout.
Waynesburg will look to keep on winning in the PAC on Thursday, April 5, when the Jackets travel to Greenville to face Thiel. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
