ERIE, Pa. (May 16) – Despite being down two starters, the Waynesburg University baseball team battled down to the final out of Wednesday's Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoff game at Penn State Behrend. After falling behind by six runs, the Yellow Jackets nearly pulled off a dramatic ninth-inning comeback before seeing their season end in an 8-7 defeat at the hands of the Lions.
Waynesburg (22-19) fell behind early when Behrend (27-15-1) jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The visiting team rebounded in the top of the third inning when first-year junior right fielder
Adam Horning teed off on a solo homerun, which was his fifth long ball of the season. The Lions fired back in the bottom of the frame with a go-ahead run that put PSB ahead 2-1 after three full innings.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Behrend's lead increased to 3-1, before the Jackets cut the deficit back down to a single run (3-2) in the top of the sixth when senior third baseman
Tim Chilcote connected on a sacrifice fly that allowed senior catcher
Brendan Scioscia to score after leading off the frame with a single. The Lions appeared to put the game well out of reach by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Waynesburg wasn't ready to see 2012 come to an end.
Trailing 8-2 heading into the top of the ninth inning and yielding the first out of the frame, Horning walked and senior centerfielder
Mike Neckerman was hit by a pitch. Junior shortstop
Kyle Sasala was the third-straight Waynesburg hitter to pick up a free trip to first base to load the bases with one out on the board. Senior second baseman
Corey Goeggelman continued the Jackets' patient streak and was hit by a pitch to pick up an RBI and make the score 8-3 Behrend. Scioscia came up with a big hit of the inning with a two-run double that pulled his team to within three runs at 8-5.
After a one-out strikeout slowed the Jacket rally down, senior
Ken Rosenbauer, who was pinch-running for Goeggelman, scored on a balk that moved Scioscia to third and made the score 8-6 in favor of Penn State Behrend. After an intentional walk to senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine, freshman designated hitter
Ben Shorthouse reached base on an error that allowed Scioscia to score and cut the Jackets' deficit down to just one run (8-7). Unfortunately, that's as close as the comeback came to reaching fruition as Waynesburg's 10
th hitter of the inning grounded out with runners on first and second base to bring the season to a close.
The visiting team was led on the day by a trio of two-hit performers in Goeggelman, Scioscia and junior first baseman
Bobby Hartman. Goeggelman went two-for-four with a double and an RBI, Scioscia went two-for-five with a double, a team-high two runs scored and a squad-best two RBI and Hartman posted a double and a single in five trips to the plate.
Senior
Ben Oviatt started and worked 6.1 innings. The lefty allowed five runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk. Junior
Anthony Longo and sophomore
Zach Kreke worked the final 1.2 innings of action. As previously mentioned, Waynesburg was without freshman starting second baseman
Joseph Smith and sophomore designated hitter
Andrew Rose, who had returned home to the state of California following the conclusion of the spring semester.
