MARIETTA, Ohio (Aug. 31) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team traveled to the Buckeye State to get the 2012 season underway at the River City Tournament, which was hosted by Marietta College. After dropping their first match of the season, the Yellow Jackets rebounded with a thrilling victory in the late contest.
The Jackets (1-1) opened their season by facing off with Bluffton (Ohio) University and falling 3-0 to the Beavers. Set scores for the match were 25-20, 25-6, 25-19. Senior
Presley Cupp led the Orange and Black with 15 digs, while senior
Carly Smithyman notched a team-high 13 assists. Junior middle hitter
Mabel Culp and junior outside hitter
Amanda Silay paced the Waynesburg tack with six and five kills respectively.
Waynesburg showed tremendous resolve following the loss by gutting out a 3-2 win over Division II Ohio Valley. The Jackets took the first sets of the match 25-17 and 25-21. The Fighting Scots rebounded by taking set three 28-26 and set four 25-21. With the match on the line, Waynesburg outlasted its opposition in a 15-12 decider.
Culp gave a monster effort in the middle by pounding home a team-high 23 kills against the Scots. Silay chipped in 14 successful attacks, while freshman
Jessica Dorazio scored her first collegiate double-digit effort in kills with 13. Cupp backed up the offensive-minded trio with a team-best 29 digs.
Full statistics from these matches will be released soon. The Jackets will play two more matches at Marietta tomorrow before heading home to Pennsylvania later in the day. Waynesburg will face the host Pioneers at 10:30 a.m., before finishing up its stay at the River City Tournament in either the championship or third-place match later in the afternoon.
