Volleyball finishes River City Tournament at 2-2

MARIETTA, Ohio (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team wrapped up its two-day run at the River City Tournament on Saturday, which was hosted by Marietta College. The Yellow Jackets went 1-1 on the day to complete a 2-2 showing at the event.
 
Waynesburg played its first match of the day against the host Pioneers and dropped a 3-0 decision by the set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-11. Though it came in defeat, junior Mabel Culp enjoyed a solid offensive effort by putting down a team-high 13 kills. Senior libero Presley Cupp led the team in digs with 13, while senior setter Carly Smithyman posted a a Jacket-high 13 assists.
 
Following their loss to the eventual tournament champions, Waynesburg rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Division II Ohio Valley in the third-place match. The Yellow Jackets won the first set of the contest 25-20, but dropped set two 25-14. The Orange and Black fired back with victories in sets three and four by the scores of 25-22 and 25-23, respectively. The Jackets were led to victory by junior outside hitter Amanda Silay, who racked up a team-high 15 kills, while Culp chipped in 12 successful attacks. Smithyman assisted on 19 kills, while freshman Jessica Dorazio put down six aces.
 
Dorazio was also one of four Jackets to record at least 16 digs. Cupp led the group with 22, while Silay completed a double-double with 17 digs. Dorazio and freshman Meghan Balogh rounded out the quartet with 16 digs each. Full statistics for the Yellow Jackets will be released soon.
 
After leading the Waynesburg attack for four matches and recording 54 kills over two days, Culp was named to the all-tournament team. The Jackets will look to improve on their .500 record on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Steubenville, Ohio to face Franciscan University. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
