VALENCIA, Pa. (Aug. 31) – A young Waynesburg University women's tennis team opened up the 2012 season on Friday against a solid non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent in La Roche. The Yellow Jackets got a fantastic performance from freshman Rachel Klemash and won two-of-three doubles matches during a 5-4 victory over the Redhawks.
 
Klemash teamed up with sophomore Alyssa Daniel to open the match with a Waynesburg win at first doubles. The duo defeated La Roche's Victoria Shields and Alea Marks 8-5. The Hawks fired back with a win at number-two doubles before the Jackets took the early advantage with a win at third doubles. Sophomores Lauren Cowden and Ellen Limback earned their first win of the season by an 8-4 score over the home team's Lynka Ineza and Melanie Ward.
 
The Jackets' top singles players kept the winning going and ultimately decided the match with victories in three of the first four flights. Klemash took a straight-set win (6-0, 7-5) over Shields and Limback followed at the number-two spot with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ineza.
 
The Redhawks picked up their first singles win of the season at the third spot, but freshman Sarah Reyes clinched the victory for her team by downing Marks 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 in a tense back-and-forth affair. La Roche ended the day with victories at the fifth and sixth singles slots.
 
The Redhawks are coming off maybe their most successful season in program history in 2011, when they went 8-3 overall and placed third at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) tournament. The Yellow Jackets open up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they travel to Latrobe to face Saint Vincent. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
