Volleyball team goes 1-1 during home tri-match

After falling to Bethany, Waynesburg comes back to beat Chatham

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team opened the home portion of its 2012 schedule by hosting Bethany College and Chatham University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tri-match on Saturday. After dropping the first match of the day to the Bison, the Yellow Jackets bounced back with their first conference victory of the year by downing the Cougars.
 
Bethany (10-3, 3-0), which went 2-0 on the day, downed the Jackets by the set scores of 25-8, 25-20, 25-22. After the Bison picked up its second 3-0 triumph of the day, which came against Chatham, the Yellow Jackets (3-7, 1-4) ended a five-match losing streak by downing the Cougars (0-6, 0-6). Waynesburg took the contest by the set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-13.

Waynesburg was led on the attack by the junior combination of outside hitter Amanda Silay and middle hitter Mabel Culp, who averaged 2.17 and 2.33 kills per set, respectively. Senior Carly Smithyman and junior Natalie Ranallo helped out the offense with 22 and 20 assists, respectively, while the Jacket defense was paced by senior Presley Cupp, who racked up 33 digs in the two matches. Sophomore Tori Kramer led her team behind the service line with a squad-high six service aces.
 
The Jackets will try to keep their winning ways going on Tuesday, Sept. 18, when they play host to Westminster in another PAC showdown. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
NOTE: Bethany defeated Chatham 25-7, 25-10, 25-13 in the second match of the day.
