Women's tennis makes team history in 6-3 loss to Grove City

Yellow Jackets avoid shutout against Wolverines for first time since 2006

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team made a little team history during Wednesday's showdown with the 25-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champions from Grove City. The Yellow Jackets avoided a 9-0 sweep at the hands of the Wolverines for the first time since 2006 as GCC scored a 6-3 conference victory.

The Yellow Jackets (2-4, 1-3) got an impressive performance from freshman Rachel Klemash, who teamed up with sophomore Alyssa Daniel to grit out a gutsy 9-7 victory over Leah Thomsen and Lauren Troxel at first doubles. The first-year standout followed that win with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Troxel at first singles. With those two wins, Klemash began the first Jacket woman to score a pair of victories over Grove City (4-1, 4-0) opposition in a regular season match since before 1998.

Waynesburg's third win of the afternoon came at fourth singles where junior Markie Gustafson beat Kaitlin Heese 6-3, 6-2. The home team came as close as any Jacket squad in recent history to scoring a victory over the powerhouse Wolverines. Sophomore Ellen Limback just missed out on taking set one of her number-three singles contest, which went 7-6, 6-0 to Grove City's Kendra Tetrick. Freshman Sarah Reyes just missed out on a win by mere points during her 7-6, 6-4 loss to Leah White.

After a strong showing in defeat, Waynesburg returns to non-PAC competition on Friday, Sept. 21, with a road trip to Mt. Aloysius. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
