WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 16) – Despite having two players score more than 20 points in the contest, the Waynesburg University men's basketball team couldn't contain Saint Vincent's offense in an 80-67 loss Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-7 in the conference and 6-11 overall. Meanwhile, the Bearcats remained atop the PAC standings by improving to 7-1 in the PAC and 12-5 overall.
Saint Vincent immediately grabbed control of the contest by jumping out to a 25-4 lead at the 9:51 mark of the first half. The Yellow Jackets used some hot shooting and timely defense to put together a 15-0 run to cut the Saint Vincent lead to 25-19 with 4:43 to go in the first half. By the time the first half came to a close, the Jackets trailed just 32-28 at halftime.
Waynesburg carried its strong play into the second half with a three-point jumper by sophomore
Kenny Klase that brought the Jackets to within two points at 37-35 with 16:09 showing on the scoreboard clock. Unfortunately for the Jackets, that was as close as they got to pulling off the upset. Saint Vincent was able to to answer each Waynesburg run down the stretch run of the contest and eventually built its lead to as many as 15 points on three separate occasions.
Despite the loss, Waynesburg received strong performances with sophomores
Jason Propst and
Jacob Fleegle who tallied 23 and 21 points respectively to continue their solid season-long offensive play. Sophomore
Thomas Ellis pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and poached away a team-high three steals for Waynesburg.
Both teams shot well from the floor, as Saint Vincent finished at 47.3 percent from the field (26-of-55), while Waynesburg connected on 41 percent (25-of-61) of its tries. The Jackets hit five three pointers, two of which came from Fleegle. The Jackets had a solid night at the charity stripe, converting 12-of-14 free throw attempts. Unfortunately, the Bearcats also knocked down their free throws, converting on 22-of-25 attempts from the line..
Waynesburg returns to PAC play when the Jackets host Bethany on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
