Women's tennis wraps up outstanding regular season

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 12) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team wrapped up one of its best seasons in recent history with a 5-4 victory over visiting Goucher College on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets' 11-4 overall record is the team's best since before 2003. The win over the Gophers (2-2) was the first for Waynesburg in recent program history. The home team got off to a fast start thanks to its three doubles teams. After Goucher scored a win at third doubles, Waynesburg's number-two pair of junior Madison DuBrock and sophomore Rachel Wilson tied things up with an 8-4 victory. The Jackets scored a crucial win at first doubles when sophomore Rachel Klemash and senior Markie Gustafson pulled out a thrilling 9-7 triumph.

Goucher took a 3-2 lead after the first and sixth singles matchups, which were both won by the Gophers, were completed. Junior Lauren Cowden tied things up after picking up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fifth singles, but the visiting team regained its advantage with a win at fourth singles.

Sophomore Sarah Reyes showed her toughness by pulling out a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win at number-three singles. That victory set the stage for Gustafson, who won her final match at Waynesburg's home facility to give the Yellow Jackets the overall win. The DuBois, Pa. native bested her opponent 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

With a fantastic regular season wrapped up, Waynesburg turns its attention to the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships, which will be held at Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. Day one of the two-day event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18.
