WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 23) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team battled to a thrilling 1-1 double-overtime tie with Westminster College on Wednesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Presidents' Athletic Conference contest also served as the team's senior night.
Both teams played through a low-scoring first half until sophomore
Karleigh Murphey put the Jackets on the board first just before halftime, scoring with just 10 seconds remaining in the first half. The goal was Murphey's third on the season and the first allowed by Westminster in PAC play in 2013.
The Jackets (6-7-1, 3-2-1) held that lead for just over 20 minutes before the Titans (9-5-2-, 4-0-2) tied things up in the 67
th minute of play. Despite several strong scoring opportunities over the remainder of regulation, the contest advanced into the first-of-two overtime periods.
Waynesburg held an 18-to-eight shot advantage over the first 90 minutes of play and out-shot its opposition three-to-one in the first overtime. Waynesburg furiously tried to score in the final minutes of overtime number two to grab victory, but those efforts fell just short.
Waynesburg settled for the tie, despite an impressive 25-to-nine shot advantage and a seven-to-two advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore
Ciara Scott got the start for Waynesburg in net and stopped five shots in 110 minutes of action.
The Jackets are back in action when they travel to face rival Washington and Jefferson on Saturday, Oct. 26. Waynesburg will look for its third-straight win over the Presidents. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
