WAYNESBUERG, Pa. (Oct. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team won a thrilling Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Wednesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. With less than one minute to play in regulation, sophomore
Karleigh Murphey teed up a bouncing ball in front of the Geneva net and buried it past the Golden Tornado keeper for the only goal in a 1-0 Yellow Jacket victory.
With the win, the Jackets (8-7-1, 5-2-1) moved into fourth place in the PAC standings. The top four teams qualify for next week's conference championship tournament. Geneva fell to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in PAC play.
Both teams found the occasional scoring opportunities, but for the most part, the game was played in the middle third of the field. Finally, Murphey and her teammates were able to press into the Golden Tornado goal box as the final minutes of the game melted away. With just 58 seconds showing on the clock, Murphey scored the game-deciding point. The Jackets killed the final few seconds of the contest and celebrated their second-straight win. Waynesburg has just one loss over its previous eight games.
Sophomore
Ciara Scott did her part for the home team by recording her third shutout of the year. She stopped all five shots put on goal.
Waynesburg's postseason plans will ultimately be decided during Friday's road trip to Saint Vincent. A win or a tie assures the Jackets of the number-four spot in the league standings and their third-straight trip to the PAC playoffs. A loss eliminates them from postseason competition. Start time for the contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
