WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 9) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team wrapped up regular season President's Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday with a home match against Washington & Jefferson. The Yellow Jackets won a thriller at their home courts by the final score of 5-4.
Waynesburg (10-4, 6-3), which ran its current winning streak to six matches, trailed 2-1 after the three doubles matches concluded. Junior
Madison DuBrock and sophomore
Rachel Wilson scored an 8-3 victory at third doubles in what turned out to be a key spot for the home team.
The Jackets responded to the Presidents' (8-7, 4-5) challenge by winning four-of-six singles matches. Dubrock and fellow junior
Lauren Cowden were the first Waynesburg competitors to complete their victories, which came at sixth and fifth singles, respectively. Both wins were accomplished in straight sets.
Singles flights two and three were the next to come off the court, which both saw Presidents' players emerge victorious. Trailing 4-3 with just two sets remaining, the sophomore duo of
Rachel Klemash and
Sarah Reyes came through with match-clinching triumphs. After Klemash won in straight sets at number-one singles to tie things up, Reyes put together an appropriate end to a thrilling afternoon. The second-year starter dropped the first set of her fourth singles match 6-3, but rebounded to take the flight 6-2, 6-3 and give her team the win.
Waynesburg's victory over the Presidents gave them a final PAC winning percentage of 67 percent, which is the team's highest since going 3-1 in conference action in 2006. The Jackets' 10 overall victories comprise the highest single-year total for the program since before 2005. The Orange and Black's regular season finale is scheduled to be played on Saturday, Oct. 12, against Goucher (Md.). Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
