STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Nov. 23) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team pulled away late in a back-and-forth game to earn a 78-69 victory over Franciscan Saturday afternoon in Steubenville, Ohio.
Waynesburg (3-1) boasted a balanced offensive attack that featured four players scoring in double figures. Junior forward
Jacob Fleegle poured in a game-high 19 points, while fellow juniors
Jason Propst,
Kenny Klase and
Thomas Ellis scored 14 points each in the win. Junior
Byrum Louco led the way on the glass with a team-best 10 rebounds, while junior
Casey Hope swiped three steals for the road team in victory.
Both teams had no problem scoring in the first half, as the Jackets battled back from a seven-point deficit before finishing the half on a 9-1 run to take a 42-41 advantage at the break. Waynesburg picked things up defensively in the second half, while Propst powered the offense. The reigning PAC Player of the Week totaled 10 points and seven rebounds in the second half as the Jackets out-scored the Barons 36-to-28.
The tide of the game seemed to turn after freshman
Christian Koroly converted two free throws to tie the contest at 56-56 with 10:54 to play. The Jackets never trailed from that point forward and built leads as large as 11 points before putting the final touches on the victory.
The visitors put together a solid effort on offense, converting 40.9 percent of their field goal attempts. Waynesburg also held a decisive 51-to-35 advantage in rebounding.
The Jackets will look to continue their early season success when they take a road trip to Canton, Ohio, to face Division II Malone University on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
