Jacket baseball team sweeps two from UPG

Waynesburg wins both games by 5-3 final score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 14) – The Waynesburg University baseball team enjoyed its first sweep of a doubleheader this season by taking a pair of 5-3 wins from Pitt Greensburg on Thursday at the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitation. The Yellow Jackets (4-4) have won three of their last four games and improved their overall record to .500 for the first time this season.

The Jackets struck first in the opener when senior third baseman Tim Chilcote came up with a clutch two-out RBI single to drive in junior centerfielder Clay Roman and give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead. UPG (1-6) wasted little time in tying the game up by putting up a run in the top of the second inning, but the Orange and Black quickly regained the lead when senior second baseman David Houseman plated junior catcher Marc Timmons with a run-producing single to put his team up 2-1.

After keeping the Bobcats off the board in the top of the third, Waynesburg scored the eventual game-winning runs in the bottom of the frame. After Roman led off the inning with a walk and stole second, senior first baseman Bobby Hartman gave the Jackets their first multi-run lead of the day at 3-1 with an RBI single. Two batters later, Hartman scored on a passed ball that made the score 4-1.

Pitt Greensburg cut its deficit down to a single run at 4-3 by the time the top of the fourth came to a close. Waynesburg maintained its one-run advantage until the bottom of the fifth, when the Yellow Jackets picked up an important insurance run. Senior leftfielder Nick Berdine walked to lead off the inning and moved to second thanks to a Hartman single. After the two base runners pulled off a double steal, Berdine came into score when Chilcote picked up his game-high second RBI that brought about the final score of 5-3.

Waynesburg out-hit UPG 12-to-eight on the day. Hartman, Chilcote, Timmons and Houseman collected two hits each in the win, while Roman scored a game-high two runs. All 12 of the Jackets' hits were singles.

Senior Anthony Longo put together a complete game on the mound on his way to the victory. He gave up two earned runs on eight hits and five walks, while also picking up three strikeouts.

While game one featured a solid team effort when it came to offense, the late contest of the twin bill was more of a one-man show. Berdine continued to have a very productive spring trip by driving in all five of the Jackets' runs in the victory.

After Greensburg built up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Waynesburg fired back with a two-spot in the top of the third frame when Berdine smacked a two-run single that scored Roman and senior shortstop Kyle Sasala.

The Yellow Jackets still trailed by one heading into the top of the fifth. After Sasala and Roman led off the inning with back-to-back singles, Berdine launched a three-run homer that gave Waynesburg its first advantage of the late contest. The big blast was more than enough support for freshman starting pitcher Brian Resnik, who put the finishing touches on a complete game of his own.

While Berdine drove in all five runs in the victory, he got plenty of support from Roman and Sasala. Roman and Berdine both went three-for-five at the plate and while the All-PAC outfielder drove in a handful of runs, the first-year junior scored two of them. Sasala added a two-for-four showing with two runs scored.

After a bit of a shaky start, Resnik was untouchable over his final six innings of work. UPG gave up both of his hits and all three of his runs, all unearned, during that opening frame. The Burgettstown, Pa. native gave up just two hits and two walks over seven innings of work, while striking out three Cats.

Waynesburg wraps up its stay in Florida with a pair of nine-inning games on Friday, March 15. The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to face Ripon at 2 p.m., before facing Trinity (Conn.) at 7 p.m.
