WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team welcomed Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Geneva to its home field on Saturday for a conference doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets rode some fine starting pitching to a 3-0 win in game one, before the Golden Tornadoes rebounded with a 5-3 triumph in the late game.
Waynesburg (11-13, 4-8) freshman pitcher
Brian Resnik improved to 5-1 on the season by allowing just four hits and one walk over a complete-game victory in the opener. Resnik struck out four Tornadoes (10-16, 5-9) on his way to the triumph.
The rookie righty got all of the offensive support he needed in the bottom of the second when senior shortstop
Kyle Sasala singled in junior catcher
Marc Timmons to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth thanks to senior second baseman
David Houseman scoring on a single by Sasala and an RBI groundout by senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine.
Sasala and Houseman collected two hits each to make up the majority of Waynesburg's six base knocks in the win.
Geneva scored its first run of the day in top of the first inning of game two and maintained that advantage until the bottom of the second, when a Tornado error led to the Jackets tying the game up at 1-1. The visiting team jumped back into the lead with two runs in the third frame and two more in the fourth to go ahead 5-1.
Waynesburg put together one last shot at a comeback when freshman designated hitter
Brent Williams singled to score junior
Andrew Rose and trim the deficit down to 5-2. Freshman pinch-runner
Kyle Weyand scored the final run of the contest on a Geneva error to bring about the final score of 5-3.
Williams made the most of his first collegiate start by going a team-best two-for-three at the plate in the late game. Fellow freshman
Connor Furwa started on the mound and suffered the loss after working 3.2 innings on the mound. He gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits and a walk. Sophomore
Thomas Ellis kept Waynesburg's hopes for victory alive by providing 3.1 excellent innings of relief work on the mound. The righty gave up just two hits and struck out one on the day.
The Jackets return to action on Tuesday, April 16, when they head to Greenville for a PAC doubleheader against Thiel. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
