GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 16) – The Waynesburg University baseball team scored a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) upsets during Tuesday's road trip to Thiel. The Yellow Jackets moved up to fifth in the conference standings by sweeping the Tomcats by the final scores of 6-4 in game one and 3-2 in game two.
Waynesburg (13-13, 6-8) has now won four of its last five games, all in the PAC. Thiel (17-12, 10-4) had suffered just two PAC losses all season coming into Wednesday's twin-bill.
After three scoreless innings to open game one, the Jackets struck in a big way with five runs in the top of the fourth frame. Senior first baseman
Bobby Hartman got some help from a Thiel error that allowed junior centerfielder
Clay Roman and senior shortstop
Kyle Sasala to score the game's first two runs. Two batters later, senior third baseman
Tim Chilcote doubled to left-center to score Hartman and senior left fielder
Nick Berdine to move his team ahead 4-0. After Thiel recorded the second out of the inning, sophomore designated hitter
Neal Yakopin produced a clutch RBI single that brought Chilcote home to put Waynesburg up 5-0.
The Tomcats cut into Waynesburg's lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Jackets responded with a run in the top of the fifth. Roman scored on an error during Hartman's at-bat to put the visiting team up 6-2.
The Cats made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh by plating the game's final two runs and putting two runners on the base pads with two outs on the board. However, sophomore starting pitcher
J. Jay Paskert settled down and got the final out of the contest to secure the victory.
Paskert improved to 5-3 on the season by giving up three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. The first-year Yellow Jacket recorded four strikeouts in the victory. It was his team-leading sixth complete game of the season.
Seven different Jackets combined to produce the team's eight hits in the early contest. Sasala led the group with a pair of singles. Roman scored a game-high two runs, while Chilcote picked up a game-high two RBI.
Game two had a familiar tone to it in the beginning, as both teams failed to score over the first three innings of competition. Waynesburg broke up the 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth when a Chilcote double scored Hartman to make the score 1-0. Chilcote came across to score when Yakopin came through with a two-out single to double their team's advantage.
The Tomcats quickly tied the game up with a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth, and the score stayed knotted up at 2-2 through the end of regulation. Waynesburg scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth frame when Chilcote completed a fantastic day of work at the plate by driving in Hartman to put his team back ahead by a run.
Sophomore relief pitcher
Thomas Ellis did his part to close up the win by pitching a one-two-three bottom of the eighth inning. He improved to 2-0 on the year by facing Thiel's two-through-seven hitters and retiring them in order. Ellis relieved senior starter
Anthony Longo, who gave up two earned runs on seven walks. The veteran righty didn't allow a walk.
Hartman and Chilcote paced the Waynesburg offense in game two by both going two-for-four at the plate. Chilcote doubled and drove in a game-high two runs in the win, while Hartman scored a contest-best two runs.
After completing a vital PAC sweep on Tuesday, Waynesburg faces three more important conference clashes this weekend with Thomas More coming to town. The Yellow Jackets and Saints, who are currently tied with Thiel for second in the PAC, will face each other in a nine-inning game on Friday and a seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday.
