WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 26) – The Waynesburg University baseball team picked up an important win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Westminster on Friday at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-1 lead after three innings and went on to take down the Titans 10-4.
The Jackets (17-16, 8-11) wasted little time in establishing control of the nine-inning contest. After retiring Westminster (14-19, 6-11) in order in the top of the first, the Orange and Black, which served as the home team, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. The Jackets picked up just three hits in the inning, all of which were RBI singles, which came from senior first baseman
Bobby Hartman, senior third baseman
Tim Chilcote and senior right fielder
Adam Horning. Senior second baseman
David Houseman also drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded to close up the scoring.
After the Titans picked up their first run in the top of the second, the Jackets got the run back and more in the bottom of the inning. After Hartman drilled an RBI triple to score senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine, Chilcote ran his team's advantage to 6-1. Horning really put Westminster in a tough spot when he teed off on his third homerun of the season to make the score 9-1 Jackets.
Berdine closed up the scoring for Waynesburg with a sacrifice fly RBI that allowed senior shortstop
Kyle Sasala to cross home plate and to expand his team's lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the third. Westminster managed to pull to within six runs with a score in the fourth and two more in the sixth, but it was too little, too late for the Titans. Neither team scored over the final three innings of the afternoon.
Senior
Anthony Longo pitched his way to the win on the mound after giving up four runs, all earned, on nine hits and a walk over seven innings of work. Sophomore
Sean Boyle worked the final two innings of the win and gave up just one hit, while striking out two Westminster hitters.
Horning led the Waynesburg offense by going two-for-four at the dish with a homerun, four RBI and a run scored. Hartman went two-for-four with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI, while Chilcote added two singles of his own with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Yellow Jackets will look to win the weekend series with Westminster tomorrow, when they head to New Wilmington, Pa. to take on the Titans in a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
