NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 27) – The Waynesburg University baseball team stayed alive for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs by splitting a seven-inning doubleheader at Westminster on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 12-2 win in game one, before falling 5-1 in the late contest.

After two scoreless innings, the Jackets (18-17, 9-12) jumped out to a 10-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth frame. Junior centerfielder Clay Roman picked up an RBI groundout in the third, before senior second baseman David Houseman singled in Waynesburg's second run of the contest during inning number four, before senior shortstop Kyle Sasala drew a walk with the bases loaded to put his team up 3-0. Junior centerfielder Clay Roman connected on the big hit of the inning when he drilled a two-run single that made the score 5-0.

Waynesburg really took control of the early contest in the top of the sixth, when senior leftfielder Nick Berdine slapped a two-run single that ran the Jackets' advantage up to 7-0. After senior Tim Chilcote singled in run number eight, senior right fielder Adam Horning poked a two-run double that made the score 10-0 Jackets.

After Westminster scored both its runs in the bottom of the sixth, Waynesburg regained its double-digit lead in the top of the seventh inning, when Berdine blasted off on his PAC-leading sixth homerun of the season, a two-run bomb, to bring about the final score of 12-2.

Along with out-hitting the Titans 13-to-seven and not committing an error on defense, the Yellow Jackets got a solid pitching effort from freshman Brian Resnik. The rookie righty improved to 5-2 on the season after tossing a complete game that included seven hits and two walks given up on the day. The first-year standout struck out four Westminster batters in the win.

Game two unfolded in a much different fashion than the opener for Waynesburg, as Westminster jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Jackets fired back with their only run of the game in the top of the fourth frame when Chilcote brought Roman in to score with an infield single. Unfortunately, the Titans wrapped up the victory by firing back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the fifth. The Jacket bats cooled off from game one, as Waynesburg managed just a total of four hits in the loss.

Sophomore J. Jay Paskert started and suffered the loss after giving up four runs, all of which were earned on five hits and a walk. He also struck out two Titans in the late contest, before turning things over to freshman Tyler Prevost, who worked 1.2 innings on the mound. Sophomore Thomas Ellis highlighted Waynesburg's pitching performances by striking out the side in order in the sixth.

Waynesburg wraps up the 2013 regular season with a crucial three-game PAC series against Grove City next week. The Yellow Jackets host Grove City for senior day on Friday, May 3. First pitch of the nine-inning contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
